Blue Ridge Pkwy

I would love to hear from those of you who have done the BRP from end to end in a trip. How did you do it? Where did you stay? How long at each cg? Any other details you might add. Thanks!
  • We traveled the entire length of the BRPW and Skyline Drive with the goal of camping at all the NP campgrounds, we did and loved it. The NP campground site parking pads are short by todays standards, we were in a truck camper so it was a non-issue. During the week the cg's are empty but do fill up for the weekend. Normally we find a site by noon on Friday and stay there until Sunday.

One issue we found was low hanging branches along the drive, especially during or after a rain. We lost a Jack antenna on the rv parking entrance to Maybre (sp?) Mill.

Every few days we dropped off the drive to go into a town for supplies. It was fun visiting little towns we had never even heard of before.

There is a ton of hiking trails if you enjoy that.

Hopefully you will not be rushed and have the time to enjoy it all.
  • We traveled the BRP one day by car and stopped at each overlook; took forever and the scenery never seemed to change. Wouldn't want to do it towing my TT. Too many hills and curves as I remember.
  • We traveled it by car and parked the MH elsewhere. There are not a lot of campgrounds, fuel, grocery stores or fuel so be prepared. It's a beautiful ride, but not one we would want to do in our big MH.
  • Do you remember what campgrounds you used? How long you stayed at each campgroumd? Thanks for the input.
  • We spent a week on the BRP and Shenandoah National Park last (early) May. It was a great time to be there as not many other folks were. We too stayed at the CG's just off the parkway as the parkway CG's don't open until the middle of May. Traffic was almost non existent and as noted you will rarely be traveling at the 45 mph max speed limit. In Shenandoah NP the limit is 35 and 25 is more appropriate for most of the park.

We were in our 24' Class C which was fine but much of the parkway is not engineered for large RV's. Those with large fivers/TT's and Class A's will have a better time parking the rig and utilizing their toads to experience the best of the Parkway. We found Asheville NC to be an ideal place to enter the Parkway as just south (of Asheville) are several very restricted bridges and tunnels that even our C could not navigate. When we exited Shenandoah NP at the north end it was a short drive into Washington DC.

if you are ever going to be in this part of the country I highly recommend you spend some time on the BRP and in Shenandoah NP.

  • We've done it twice, once each way. We took 3 or 4 days and camped off the parkway at campgrounds close to the BRP. The speed limit is 45 most of the way IIRC and you won't be going that fast most of the time. We just took our time and stopped frequently at points of interest.

We did have a smaller Trailmanor TT when we drove it. I beilieve there is at least one overpass that is too low for larger RVs and you would need to detour around. There is an excellent official website that has a mile by mile map of the parkway.
