An experienced hiker knows that you pre-warn a bear by making noise. I wonder if these experienced rangers did so on their quiet bikes.
Also, it was a sow with cubs along the trail. They are very protective. These are completely differently circumstances. There are precautions to take. Be prepared but you don't have to be frightened. If so, then don't go in these areas.
