Boondocking in Southern California???
We are going to be "on call" for babysitting 2 grandkids this winter. They live in Santa Monica. We would like to be able to get to them within a few hours, without having to stay at one of the expens...

The closest campground to Santa Monica is, I think, Leo Carillo, maybe an hour away:

There are several others in the Angeles National Forest, around two hours away:

I am not a big fan of the Angeles Nat Forest -- dry and crowded. Maybe try the Los Padres up near Ojai, which is also around two hours from Santa Monica, depending on traffic. The forestcamping.com website is very helpful.
