Wow, are you serious? I have not heard about Canada being in that bad shape??

Maybe I am missing something, but - and granted I am using Al Gore's Internet as a research tool :W - I do not see anything in the Treaty of Ghent where the US and Great Britain negotiated "mutual agreement" or "veto power" on opening and closing the Canadian border.

Interesting find. I doubt a treaty made before Canada became a nation would really apply. Regardless I think the border closing between us and the usa is just an
informal agreement. Trump would never let a a 200 year old treaty get in his way. The whole closing thing needs to be modified. Presently it makes no sense. You can fly but not drive. Jaxdad must be a good historian!

Yes, very old, 1814 in fact. It’s called The Treaty of Ghent, it was the peace treaty that ended the War of 1812. Neither the British nor the Americans had the people, money or desire to militarize the newly settled border. The Americans were concerned their army would be needed against the Spanish & Mexico, the British were wanting to recall their army because of worries over the French militarization. So it was agreed that the border would never closed or armed except by mutual agreement.

It was well before Al Gore invented the Internet, LOL, so I’m not sure if it’s online or not.

You spoke of a very old mutual agreement. There must be something in print with a full description of the agreement. You should provide a link . Where did you hear of that agreement?

I just want to cross the border so I can take the shortest route across the USA. I have no intention of stopping. But I guess that is also out of the question.

Although I think that would work policing it would be tough.

But I agree. It’s the daily cross border traffic that has the most risk.

So are you talking about a one way opening? Canadians can come for extended vacations in the US but US citizens can’t vacation in Canada? I think you would need to make it more like US citizens going to Alaska, if a Canadian wants to snowbird they must reach their destination in four days and NO dawdling. :b
