border patrol

I have a question that has been asked me by a couple of american friends. They wonder why I worry about the 182 day limit. I try to explain that their uncle sam would then want to tax me as a resident on any income including pension. I also explain our health care issues with extended leaves from the province of residence. I would love to spend up to 8 months in the US with them and other american friends that want us to visit their home states in the summer when it is nice weather wise.

Does anyone actually know if the US authorities know how long we are in the US? We pass into Mexico without any border control and return to the US check points that are monitored. How do they know how long we are in or out of the US?

I also wonder if the US and Canadian border patrol people share departure/return information. It does seem unlikely but, in this day and age of computers, it could easily be available if so desired.
  • Massive computer data farms, facial recognition, passport scanning, credit card charges, cell phone records, social media, etc...

I think the US government has many ties (both public and private,) and invested heavily into IT after 9-11. IMO, you wouldn't stand a chance if push came to shove.
  • Canada and Alaska must be sharing some info because you can find stories of folks claiming Alaska residency to get the annual payment and then being caught from using the border crossing data.
Alaska has a vested interest in trying to catch those who overstay or falsely report.
  • If you were questioned at all, how would you prove where you were and how long/little time you spent there?
  • Yes, our respective border patrols share entry / exit info as of a couple of years ago I think.

Lots of my Canadian RV friends used to say "How will they know we're breaking the rules?". Do you really want to take that chance?

4 months is quite enough for me.
