For true history buffs, walking the Freedom Trail is almost a must-do! There's a wealth of history to be seen. The USS Constitution is in dry-dock for repairs, but still available for regular tours. Boston Duck-boat tour is something you might want to plan on as well.
I don't spend much time north of Boston, so would recommend Normandy Farms. Probably the best resort in the area, but maybe more than you're after. Super clean, large sites, not cheap. 5 minute ride to the train station in Mansfield, but I might suggest driving to the Quincy train station for a much more frequent schedule into South Station. Less pre-planning required! Foxboro to Quincy is a 15 min easy ride.
