Boston

We're thinking of returning to Boston after Labor Day. We were there a couple of years ago, but only spent a day in the city. We'd like to see some things we didn't last time, which was predominantly things along the Freedom Trail. We enjoy historical sites, museums, things like that.

Some questions:
What are recommendations of things to see?
Where to stay? Last time we stayed at Pinewood Lodge in Plymouth. We liked it, and it was quiet and clean. We don't need a lot of options but my wife likes FHUs.
Best way in? Last time we drove. Big mistake. Our vehicle is a SUV so parking at a train lot isn't a problem.

Thanks much!
John
  • Ahhhhhhhh...... You drive too darned slow! ;)

Actually more like at least 25 mins, not counting actual departure and arrival points, except during rush hour when anything goes.
  • I don't think there is any such thing as "too" slow on 495. Dead stop is more like it; any time of day.
  • I agree - more like dead stop as you near Boston, whether on the Pike, or I-95, or much of I-495. Best find alternate transportation, but it's readily available.

In addition to what's above - if you have time (and these are drive-to yourself) Plimoth Plantation and Old Sturbridge Village are incredibly historic ... Plimoth is small and brief, Sturbridge is ALL day. If you choose only one, Sturbridge ...

Also, if you get a chance to visit Cape Cod, Heritage Plantation just across the bridge in Sandwich is worth the trip. Excellent day trip. DO NOT drive to the Cape Friday evening, or leave Saturday or Sunday mid-day ... Otherwise, traffic is very do-able both on and off Cape over the bridges.
  • We stayed at the Boston/Cape Cod KOA and they shuttled us to the T station and picked us up when we returned. We took the T right to the beginning of the Freedom Trail and followed the trail to Quincey Market and then on to the North End. We made the mistake of eating at Quincey Market, should have waited to eat in the North End.
After Boston we went onto Cape Cod and camped in Truro.
    Enjoy your visit.

Ahhhhhhhh - 75 is too slow? I do it several times a month.
  • Thanks all! We settled on Normandy Farms for a couple of reasons, one of them being Minuteman not having any sites available for part of the time we'll be there. Thanks for the mass transit suggestions....we learned that one the hard way a couple of years ago!

We're going to hit Lexington and Concord as well....thanks for that! We've been to Salem and Plymouth (including Plimouth Plantation). We were also to Cape Cod on our last trip. I'd do that again in a heartbeat, especially after Labor Day.

Anyway, we're looking forward to the trip and appreciate everyone's kind suggestions.
  • We enjoyed the JFK museum. If you go to Lexington/Concord area, make a stop at Walden pond too.
