I would think the rail, It's been 10 years since I drove into Boston and it wasn't fun.
One add on, Salem is 20 miles north of Boston and with the teens being into the witches and Twilight type shows, your daughters may enjoy a day there. Staying a night or two between there and Kittery Maine would make that an easy addition.
