Calif. Coast Trip

Hoping to take about a 2+ week trip along the Ca. coast (prbly mid coast) Santa Cruz down to bout San Luis Obispo (Hwy 1) in Sept. Would like to stay in maybe 2 places 1 week each, looking for nice places for a 30' Class A w/good pet friendly hiking and sights along the way w/ good ocean views and good places for the kids to run and play (on/off leash) :-) Thank you, kennyp, Cottonwood, CA.

  • If you get really lucky and snag a space this close to your trip, Plaskett is lovely and has a beautiful and dog friendly beach across the street. It is north of San Simeon (Hearst Castle) on the PCH in the heart of Big Sur. Have fun and we all hope the fires are greatly diminished for your arrival.

Buy the Good Sam Directory (at Camping World in Aderson) or use the internet "Good Sam Club" to help plan your trip and locate RV parks that will meet your needs. You need to start making reservations right away for your whole trip.
  • We really like Smithwoods in Felton, near Santa Cruz -- lots to do in the area -- Henry Cowell, Big Basin, and a wonderful coastline.

Between Monterey and Santa Cruz on the coast is the very small town of "Moss Landing" with a great KOA campground--again small. You can literally walk to 3 great resturants- --Phil's is our favorite, ride bicycles, walk or ride to the beach and around the Marina. Very clean place and 1 of our favorite spots. Lars

Double Dittos: The one resturant has amazing fresh seafood.

  • I just got back from a similar planned trip but changed and went North because of the fires. Going North, Anchor Bay is fun, opt for a space closer to the ocean, less road noise. Lots of other great campgrounds close to the beach. The drive is slow-going and somewhat challenging. Just take your time. No smoke up there.
  • San Simeon State Park just south of Hearst Castle. Morro Bay State Park next to Morro Bay and Montana de Oro just a little further south. Welcome to the forum.
  • Big fires burning there right now. This may cause a change in your plans. Most everything is closed or will be closed. Officials say may be late August to reopen. Google "BIG SUR Fires"
