Consider using wood pellets. There's a place here in Maine that makes cages (for lack of a better word) made of stainless steel mesh. Repose Fire Logs: http://woodpelletlogs.com/ Fill the cages with pellets and they'll burn like regular firewood. Best part: you can haul pellets from state to state (I use big buckets like the ones chemicals for swimming pools come in, or drywall buckets), and they run about $4/40-pound bag. You'll do a lot of burning to go through 40 pounds in a weekend, and if you don't, which we never do, you just take them home for the next time. Make sure you get hardwood pellets.
