We wouldn't think of camping without a nice fire to sit in front of at night. Here in SoCal, when there's a Red Flag fire warning, you can forget about propane fireplaces, charcoal or gas BBQs. The only allowed cooking device during a Red Flag warning is a metal gas or propane stove, and you have to sign up for a permit to use that: No Open Flames...

As in most things nowdays you have to check out the fine print. Unless I'm reading this wrong some campgrounds are OK.
No wood or charcoal fires are allowed except in identified developed campgrounds and developed picnic areas within designated fire rings.
