There are some types of wood that smell very nice when burning. However, there is such a thing as "too much of a good thing." I have been in some CGs that were so smokey from campfires, the TT interior smelled distinctly like smoke for 2 days afterward.
DW is allergic to the smoke of many varieties of wood... clogs her sinuses up really bad. No wonder she doesn't camp with me any more.
I never build a campfire. Thinking back to early camping days with my parents, I recall that the only times we built a fire were to roast some hot dogs and marshmallows (and then we put the fire out) or one time to smoke some fish (that fire burned low & slow for quite a while). So I guess that's why campfires don't mean that much to me today.
In Yosemite's Bridalveil Creek CG this past July, I watched one camper day after day walking back into his site with fallen logs he'd chopped with his axe. He would proceed to split the wood at his campsite. They had a fire burning almost constantly. It sure seemed like more work than I would be willing to put in on a vacation. But I assume he was enjoying himself.
