Huge thanks for all the suggestions! Settled on Durango in Red Bluff as a midway point. Hope it is as nice as it seems on the net.

i5Trucker - we are staying in Klamath for a couple of days in the Redwoods and planned to take 299 over to Tahoe so your suggestions are perfect. Had some difficulty finding adequate campgrounds around Tahoe so settled on Ponderosa in Coloma. Coloma seems to have a lot to offer.
