Can you recommend a campground near New Orleans for 5 days in January 2016? I don't want to drive over that huge bridge:) Also, any thoughts on the best route from NY to New Orleans in January driving a motorhome? I-81 to I-75 to I-59 to I-10 is the shortest but do you think I-95 to I-85 to Atlanta then I-65 to I-10 is better for potentially cold/snowy weather in January? Thanks for any advice!Roberta

I have stayed at the KOA in Slidell and also the one on the West side of town. I have never driven over that bridge you no doubt have in mind. took I-10.bumpy

The "new" I-10 bridge is no problem. Three lanes in each direction. Just long and boring. Get in the middle lane and do your thing. The natives are used to RVs poking along. (Poke along is not a phrase they understand.)There is a nice park outside of the city itself at Ponchetrain Landing. On the South shore of the lake. There is a park near the Quarter, but I wouldn't want to drive those streets with the trailer.

In 2010 we stayed at Ponchartrain Landing RV Park, outside of New Orleans. It was not a luxury park-a bit rough--if memory serves me right. But, the managers and employees were great--had an eatery, was right on the Lake which was neat and had a shuttle available that would take you into New Orleans. I believe it also had a outdoor bar. In an industrial area and roads where rough and confusing to get to the Park. We enjoyed out stay there. Enjoyed the fact it was outside the hustle of New Orleans but had a way to get right into the French Quarter. LarsA Footnote: We were in New Orleans about 3 weeks ago--during Mardi Gras--and it was cold--about 30 during the day.

We also like Ponchatrain Landing. However if you do not want to cross a long or big bridge New Orleans is not an option.

Ok with that definition of big bridge than you will probably want to avoid I-10 going into NO from Slidell, fair amount of water to pass over there, and you definitely do not want stay at the state parks south Covington and use the Causeway lots and lots of water that way. The only way to get to NO without going over some type of long water crossing would be to go all the way BR on I-12 than back south on I-10 than about Gonzales get off 1-10 go a few miles west get on Hwy 61 south which then will bring you into the Kenner, Metarie, NO.. There is a KOA in Kenner close to the airport.

Frankly you are going into South La., a part of the country where there are many areas of water of all types and sizes impossible to avoid all. Hope you enjoy NO, we go back and visit often.

If you are coming all the way from New York you will encounter a number of hills that are taller than either "big bridge" in NO. On I-65 north of Mobile there is a bridge that is also "big".

Now I will say that there are options north of the Lake which then allow easy drives into the city. In fact there are two state parks in the Covington area that are nice and close to the Causway. Beware though driving into NO at the wrong time of day will involve you in heavy stop and go traffic.

Oh yes, if you do come in on I-10 east over the industrial canal and want to stay at Pontchartrain Landing be aware that it will be you first exit as you come off the bridge to the right, you do not want to miss that!

We stayed at Bayou Signette State Park. We went over the Huey P. Long Bridge which was (unknown to us) under construction and it was a terrifying experience. We were in the right lane and about an inch from the side of the bridge. A pick up towing an enclosed trailer passed us scraping along the left side of the bridge (we were completely in our lane but right next to the center line). We discovered a much easier route by going farther west on 1-10 and heading back towards the state park. Bayou Signette is an urban state park that was redone after Katrina. Water and electric only though. Close to shopping a restaurants and a short drive to the free Algiers Ferry which takes you right to the French Qtr. Parking for the ferry was not free though. We would stay there again if we ever decided to visit New Orleans again.

you probably wouldn't like that 18? mile long one on I-10 in LA. I must have driven over that I-10 one to NO, I thought you were talking about the floating one or somesuch just N of downtown?

We like Lakeside RV Park in Livingston TX. About an hour north of New Orleans off I-12. Easy drive into city.

If you MUST avoid the bridges (as I said earlier, I-10 is not like the old 2-lane causeway), you could go to Baton Rogue and then come down around the West side of the lake. Probably somewhere around Beau Bridge.

That is the "Plantation Road" along the West/South side of the river. Lots of history there.

We were last there the week before Christmas. We go every year for our anniversary. Unfortunately, this time my wife (stone sober) tripped on a bad place in the pavement of one of the little side streets off Magazine; fell and broke her left arm just below the shoulder. As of today Physical Rehab continues. We will be back next year, if not sooner.
