Campground near Norfolk

We will be travelling from DC to Norfolk for a one day/2 night visit, then up to Assateague Island.

I'm looking for a campground that will limit our driving around. I saw several campgrounds near Williamsburg, but then we'd have to go back and forth from Norfolk and back again past Norfolk to Assateauge. We're not a military family, so can't stay on base.

Is Virginia beach the closest area?

We have 3 kids (ages 12,10,6) and don't need solitude. Something with a pool, FHU and even a laundry facility would be great. But, I would stay at an electric only site at a state park if it's more convenient.

Thanks
  • First Landing State Park is nice and will be the closest, probably the best for traffic and you'll avoid traffic on the way to the CBBT and the eastern shore. An alternative is Holiday travel park in Virginia Beach. Either are good for the dogs.

FYI, the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk are adjacent and just a tunnel drive from Hampton and Newport News.
  • Hi, My all time favorite campground is First Landing in Virginia Beach. Nothing like camping in the dunes:) Its a bit of a ride to Norfolk but not bad. It would be closer to Norfolk than staying at one of the campgrounds closer to downtown VB. You would also have to drive to downtown VB where the boardwalk is. If you like to bike the VB boardwalk is awesome. If you have time the botanical gardens in Norfolk are just beautiful. We have also done the boat tour of the aircraft carriers and the land tour although no one is allow to get off the bus. Another wonderful visit was to the Chrysler Museum. We wandered around for hours. We have also stayed in the national park in Assateauge. No hookups but worth staying at. We did have ponies wander through our site at night..saw evidence in the morning and saw them on the roadside and around the campground at peoples sites during the day. Another beautiful national park. Good luck in your search.
  • Since you are going up the DELMARVA plan a couple nights at Martinak SP & take a drive over to St Michaels, a really pretty unspoiled tow with no fast food. If you are a boater they have the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum which will keep you busy for at least a half day. Go all the way to Tilghman Island & see the busiest drawbridge on the East Coast.

    My adopted RVing home turf.
  • Google the Virginia International tattoo and it will tell you all about it. It's April 23-26 and is a wonderful show.

We are planning on doing 1st Landing in April. Visiting Norfolk for the Tattoo, Nauticus & maybe a base tour.

Have fun crossing the CBBT. Sometimes you can't see land from the middle of the bridge. Assateague is fun too. The beach side is nice but we prefer the marsh side. More likely to have the horses come through your campsite.

This was informative. We have never been to the area and I had to google CBBT. Seems like it will be an interesting drive.

What is the Tattoo in Norfolk? I googled it but only came up with tattoo parlors.

  • Virginia Beach is probably your closest area to find a campground. Can't comment on the private campgrounds there but First Landing the state park is on the bay with electric/water sites and you can see the bay/bridge tunnel from the beach.
  • Two choices: search this Forum for `Norfolk' in the RV Parks section or do a Google search for `norfolk va campgrounds'
