Campgrounds along I-81 in New York??

We have made the trip from Southern NJ north to Cananda via I-81 many times over the years, and usually, due to time and vacation day limitations, do a 10 hour trip to get to where we need to go.

Now, since we are retired, we have more time. Anybody have any recommendations for overnight stops convenient to I-85 between Binghamton and Watertown?

PS - we will be traveling October 4th through 16th.

also take 481 around Syracuse if you need NO SERVICES. Going through SYracuse is a PIA that is nicely avoided on 481. Yes it is a few miles longer but the traffic is way less during the week.
There is a campground or two in Marathon NY convenient to 81 one is called Yogi and Boo Boo's the better one IMO is Country Hills

It only adds something like a minute, if that, to the trip. It's not as long as many people think.
  • Association Island doesn't seem to be far from the 81, but is a KOA, just in case you don't like KOA.

  • Camping world is NOT near 81 it will take you at least 20 miles out of your way.
  • We have stayed in camping world in Syracuse a few times. Go in late leave early or shop the store. They do have a few electric hookups if they are available. Off I 81 on 690.
  • Your title says I81 so I am responding as if that is correct because that is the route between Binghamton and Watertown.

What time of year? If you are coming in October be aware that most CG's will close shortly (by Oct 15,2013the latest) for the winter.

Two places that stay open all year are state parks but north of Watertown. Wellseley Island State park is one just over the T.I. bridge

There is a full rest area at about MM 60 NB (including State Police office) and a pull off with no services at MP 45.

Central Square exit (left at light about 1/2 mile on right) north of Syracuse has a Walmart for overnighters
Exit 45 (left at exit and about 1/2 mile on right)in Watertown has both a Walmart and a Sam's Club. They both always have 10 - 12 overnighters in them. Mostly our friendly neighbors to the north never heard of any trouble at either place and I summer in the area.

There is a no name truck stop at the Mexico Exit. Where you used to be able to park but I have not been in there in a while

PS DO not use either the Whitney point or Pulaski exits unless you enjoy drive a few miles to get back on 81 neither place is easy on easy off and you must drive all the way through the towns to get back on 81
