I think you have been given all good advice. We prefer Custer State Park camping. In fact, next month, September, we will be their again. :)
In my opinion 5 days will not be long enough to explore everything in the Black Hills and around the Badlands. Pick what you feel is of the greatest interest to you and explore at a relaxed pace to thoroughly enjoy the experience. Two weeks would be more like it and not be constantly on the go.
