Campgrounds near Chicago

Our son has a baseball tournament near Chicago this summer. It looks like they could play between four different fields located in Wheeling, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, and Hoffman Estates. We are planning on camping at Fish Lake Beach Campground in Volo or the Chicago Northwest KOA in Union Illinois. Having a hard time deciding which location would be best since we are not familiar with the area. ANy help would really be appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Elgin may be a good bet. We never visited, so can't say.

Why the KOA over Fish Lake Beach? KOA is tight, Fish Lake Beach is sardineland. KOA is old, FLB is older, lots of seasonals, busy with groups on weekends. Just doesn't impress.
  • Your out in the country side in Union and Volo, your driving time is considerably more out there. If your looking for closer to the fields I would look at the Elgin campground.

Google map the driving from all the towns mentioned. Your also in an area with a lot more to do. The choice is yours where here to help. Any questions PM me
  • Search this Forum in the RV Parks section for `Chicago' and be disappointed in the selection.
  • Thank you everyone for your thoughts. Why are you saying KOA over Fish Beach? Just curious. Is one closer to the different ball fields than the other? Like I said before we aren't familiar with the area so we can use all the help you have to offer!

    Thanks!
  • Stayed at the KOA a number of times. Easy on & off the highway. Very quiet at night. During the day you'll have to put up with all the gunfights at the Frontier Town next door. Have some nice pull thru sites. And there's a dog run area down the hill.
Bring lots of money for the toll roads in Chi Town...

Paul Wolff forest preserve, approx. 15 minutes from Hoffman Estates,20 from Schaumburg. Very nice quiet park with water and elec. hookups.

  • rvten x2 (also from former residents of the area). Chain o' Lakes SP is probably best of the 3, but if you need FHU, then the KOA hands-down nicer than Fish Lake. Location-wise for all those towns, Chain o' Lakes is closer to them than the KOA, but the KOA is close to 90, which should get you to the Arlington Heights & Schaumburg fields a little easier.
  • Chi. KOA beats the H out of Fish Lake. We used to live in that area.
Another very good choice is the Chain O Lake State park in Fox Lake/Antioch area.
Easy routes to towns you mentioned to go to.
