If you end up east of Yellowstone just remember that once you hit the East Entrance you still have a hour drive till you hit the loop..... If south of Yellowstone in Jackson it's about 2hrs to the loop. Your best bet would be up in Gardiner Montana as its only a few miles from Mammoth hot Springs which is on the loop. I'd just stay at Fishing Bridge and be in the middle of all the action.
