I kind of like paying only for what I use.
I wouldn't stay at a place with a resort fee and no opt-out - unless I planned to use those amenities. Usually reading the website eliminates check-in surprises.
I don't think this is particularly new. We've stayed at about 100 private and public campgrounds the past four years, and paid extra in any one given place for:
Wifi
Water/electric and maybe sewer (versus a dry site)
Location by a creek or other preferred spot
Laundry machines
Showers
Pancake breakfast
Guided tour
Etc. etc.
The other campers at the same places who didn't need those things paid less than I did. Seems fair. Just like I thought it was fair for me not to pay at a place with a charge to use a huge inflatable water slide this summer.
The guest fee is smart management IMHO, since the same rule would apply to all including the local guy who books a site with the idea of inviting 10 - 20 friends and relatives over for a pool party and cookout next to your site.
