I don't think violence is on the rise at all. I think it's always been around. Maybe the shift where violence was in the past, and where it is now may have changed though. The only difference is, today the media has freer access and information technology makes it possible for us to hear about things going on all over the world that 50 years ago, was impossible. And the media has a way a sensationalizing events also, I think most of it is a deliberate attempt to scare everyone.
I think if folks keep to themselves, obey the law, and use good judgment, a lot of bad things can be avoided. Another thing, if you REALLY listen to the news media, almost every event that occurs, the culprit is known by he victim.
Now, I agree there is a new threat with the latest terrorism occurring. But there again, if the news media would not report it, it wouldn't have any scare affect and the impact would be minimal. Terrorists wins when they have successfully paralyzed the general public in fear.
Based on the OP's original post here, the terrorists have successfully paralyzed him into fear. They won, you loose. (That's really sad).
Edit: And before anyone rips a hole in me, I served in the U.S. Army, carried a riffle with live ammo and would have fired on anyone that was a threat to us. And I'd do it again! The enemy cannot win!
