Canadians filling at the pump in USA

It appears that it is not well known how a Canadian Credit Card can be used at a gas pump in the USA without a zip code.

All you have to do is insert the card and when it asks for the zip code just put in the 3 numbers from your Canadian Postal Code followed by two zeros.

For example my postal code is L9T 0P2, so when purchasing gas and it asks for a zip cope I enter 90200.

Works for me a saves going into the store with the CC.

Hope this helps someone. May not work everywhere but for me going to and coming home from Florida from Ontario this works very well.

  • It's a major pain in the azz buying gas south of the border. Wish they could figure something out that works for Canadians other than cash. There are a couple of stations where we stay that don't require a zip code and they get a lot of Canadian business.

Can you put in a random USA zip?
I would seriously hope not. Zip is the verification code that you know the billing address for that card.
  • Some address verification for credit cards strips all alpha characters and only looks we numerics. This way they can ignore any variations in spelling or abbreviations and get closer to matching an address based only on numbers.

Interesting that they do this for canadian zip codes too plus 00. Makes sense though.
  • I have found that the solution listed works about 50% of the time. In my experience Chevron is the worst but it varies greatly and doesn't seem to follow any particular gas chain. Sometimes it works and other times it won't at the same brand.
  • Unfortunately it does not seem to work consistently. I have found that it does work at some places. The problem is that it is not consistent. You could go to a Speedway that it works at and then go to the next Speedway in the same state and it does not work. I gave up trying to figure it out long ago as it was so inconsistent. I carry cash just for gas fillups.
