Cape Canaveral area

Question

We will be on a cruise next month with a port call at Port Canaveral, Fl. I used to live in Houston and have been thru the Johnson Space Center many times and am not interested in seeing the Kennedy Space Center.

This will be the last day of an eleven day cruise with shore excursions in seven ports, so would not mind just loafing on the beach or just strolling.

Is the area all built up commercially or does it have decent public beaches?

Jetty Park has a nice public beach. You can watch the cruise ships come and go, visit RonJon's surf shop in Cocoa Beach and have local crustaceans at Fish Lips.

I wouldn't say it's "built up" but the port area has a lot of new development.

My wife and I spent 5 weeks in that area when she fell on a cruise ship and broke her leg. One week in Cape Csnaveral hospital and 4 weeks in rehab facility. I'm VERY familiar with the area. Great beaches and lots to do. A visit to the space center is a great way to spend some time. There are a number of wildlife preserves in the area. Enjoy!

Yeah, NASA is just a giant museum, thanks to current Administration. Though now you have opportunities to go inside the Giant vehicle assembly building, and onto Launch pad 39A.
Merit Island National Park north of space center has beaches not packed like Cocoa beach. Great alligator spotting on trails.

Beaches and pier at Jetty Park are great. Lots of good seafood restaurants west of Jetty Park. Enjoy the ship traffic in and out of the inlet. Saw a fast attack sub during my last visit.
