Cedar Key, Florida

We will be at Sunset Isle RV Campground in Cedar Key in about 7 days. Please give me any suggestions for "must see" or do in and around a 45 minute drive.
We will be taking our bikes to ride into town.

  • stop at the visitors center one block from the beach road. helpful staff and lots of brochures. also an excellent artist studio across from the pier.
  • !.Fresh Cedar Key Smoked mullet dip, Charles Beckham seafood.
look for an old man on the side of the road, with a ice chest.

2.Secret garden bakery , in high springs Fl

we Stock up on both goodies

    3. stop in for a tour, Williston crossing RV resort. rated 10/10/10 good sams
  • If you are into museums, check out the Cedar Key Historical Museum across the street from Tony's. Had a great chat with a volunteer about the "old days" at Cedar Key. As to Tony's, I did like the chowder, but was not impressed with the burger...

Some photos of the area from my trip journal.
  • I assume the park he meant was Manatee Springs SP. There are probably manatees in the springs but I doubt the rangers will let you frolic with them. Maybe down at Crystal River but they tightened up the rules there a week ago.
  • Watch the sunset every night. Eat award winning clam chowder at Tony's. Take a boat tour with Captain Doug. Take a walk on the Nature Trail in Cedar Key. Browse the shops and art galleries in town. Drive to Chiefland to the Dakotah Winery. Visit Manatee Springs State Park and Fanning Springs State Park. Tour the Southern Cross Clam Factory.Visit the Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge to see the Shell Mounds. Eat some smoked fish dip and stone crab claws if they are in season.

They used to have Blue Grass jams in the clubhouse at Sunset Isle. Don't miss it if they have one while you are there.

We have seen manatees at Manatee Springs and Fanning Springs. You may have to travel to Homosassa Springs or Crystal River to swim with the manatees.
  • Thanks so much. Is there a place to swim with the manatees close by?
  • Tiki bar at Low Key Hideaway, Pat and Cindy would love to meet you.

Go to Tony's for clam chowder, drive over to the park on the Suwanee River ( I forgot the name). In town, there is a pretty nice boat tour that take you out to some of the islands and gives you a good narration of the history of the area.
