We've been to or through Cerro Gordo several times over the years. Lots of interesting mining history at that location. It too bad that one of its great buildings, the American Hotel, burned down a couple of years ago. The main road up from the town of Keeler is usually well graded, but has steep and switch-backed sections. I'd agree that a high clearance vehicle is best. All other roads to/from Cerro Gordo can be serious 4x4 challenges. Call the caretaker at Cerro Gordo to verify if a tour is available when you want to visit. On a clear day the views across the Owens Valley to the Sierras are wonderful.
