CG or Drycamping on west side of DC?

I'd like to visit the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum near DC's Dulles airport. I've stayed at Greenbelt NPS CG before, but driving 1/2 way around DC just ain't gonna do for this trip.

I'm open to truck stops, rest areas, parking lots, or CG's as long as they're nearby and not in bad neighborhoods. All I want to do this trip is visit that one museum. I'll be coming in on I-64. In my 19' C, and with earplugs, I'd even consider staying in a pay lot at the airport, if that's allowed. I assume I can't overnight in the parking lot at the museum, but I'm willing to be corrected. This isn't a 'camping' trip.

Thanks!

  • Manassas, Bull run Regional Park. A bit confusing & poorly signed to get into but a nice place & not far from Dulles. Enjoy the museum. It is fantastic. Much better than the one downtown. Even a mild aviation junkie can spend a whole day there easy.
  • try Geenville Farms Family camp ground, stayed there once to go to concert in Reston. It is close to Dulles, and in nice area.
  • Bull run is the place. CLose to it and it is a county park. I have stayed there and also used to live 5 iles from the airport.
  • Thanks, folks. Bull Run it'll be, tho' I'm not sure of the timing yet. Mid-week sometime in late September or early October, probably. Yes, I figure on a whole day, and will probably leave a second day open just in case I want more time.

    Jim, "Mo' coffee!"
  • There is other stuff close by too Gunston Hall and Mt Vernon as well.
