Christmas in the Keys

My family and I are packing up our Christmas tree and taking our Class C to the Keys for the week of Christmas. We love the Keys but we’ve only been there in the summer. A few questions for all you experienced winter folks:

Any skeetters that time of year?

Is it worth towing a car down (1100 miles) or do you think it would be better to rent a car for the week? I know the cost of EVERYTHING in the Keys is exponential. Snow/ice on the travel down is always a possibility.

I’m sure it’ll be crowded which is fine. We’re there to, ah, celebrate the holiday season (PARTY!)

Any tips, hints, secret finds for that time of year y’all would like to share?

We're not every Sunday church goers but we do attend from time to time and we do enjoy a Christmas eve candle light service : Methodist, Reformed, Baptist etc. Any suggestions? We're staying on Sugarloaf.

Sure do thank you much for your input! Can’t wait to see Santa in shorts and a sleeveless T.

We've been to the keys a couple of times for the Christmas break, we absolutely loved it, wish we were going this year. The first time was at Long Key SP and the second was at Bluewater, they are obviously quite different but both were fantastic places to stay.

We pulled our toad both times and we're a little farther than you, the piece of mind while traveling plus the convenience at the destination was worth it for us. We didn't have any bug problems at all on either trip.

The one thing I will recommend you not miss is a trip to Fort Jefferson and Dry Tortugas NP. We took the Yankee Freedom and had a fantastic day.
  • Heading down in a couple of days. Yeah!! Any other comments/suggestions before we go?
  • You can listen to some keys tunes at
    milemarker24.com
There is a tune about Mangrove Mama's on the "Livin' on Key West Time" album
Enjoy your Christmas in the Keys!

Out of the blue we just decided a couple days ago to go to the keys for xmas.... we were lucky and got a spot at Blue Water, so we will be heading out Sunday.
  • Huh? Blue Water? They told me we were on a list of 90. I guess the way it works with those people it's all about the time you call. Anyway good for you. See you on Duvall Street!
  • Actually, I do have a suggestion on the car... tow your car, don't rely on a rental.

I made a reservation months before I left for Florida last time. Despite having the confirmation, I got down there and was told that there were no cars for me. Apparently, the reservation meant nothing. Spent my first 2 days down there without a car and the grocery store a 40 minute or so walk away (once I had the RV hooked up, I didn't want to move it). No sight seeing for those 2 days. Pretty sure they only got on it when I sent a message to the Enterprise website with a pretty harshly worded complaint.
  • rent a golf cart call a taxi rent a bicycle no need to stay at home

Yep--- did you call or contact both parties that rent there ?
There is a .com site and a .net site --- different organizations.
Whatever, we'll be there and back on Duval, as u say. Weather looks like it's going to be fine
