Lots of history in that area. Not big rig friendly at all though.
Some of the current research indicates that the Coronado expedition of 1540 went through Apache Pass on their way north. The thought is that they crossed into what is now New Mexico just a couple miles above Interstate 10 - and I believe there is a Butterfield Stage station in that area.
It should be understood that the scholars will be arguing for many many years about Coronado's exact route. It can become somewhat like scholarly mixed martial arts when they write up their articles.
