cochise stronghold

Thinking of going to visit Ft Bowie and the stage station at Apache pass.Plan to camp at the campground at Cochise stronghold.

Planning on middle of Sept.
anyone know the weather there?Have good heater but no Air cond.
If any are interested in the Butterfield stage stations, this will be my 10th that I have visited.:)
  • We've been to Ft Apache several times, not a lot left except the graveyard. The inscriptions on the markers are very interesting. 'John Smith Pvt, age 21 years, killed by Apaches' and so on. And yes, as expected, it is darned hot. Not much of a walk tho.

Chiricahua NM has a very nice campground and is close by. Small RV's only IIRC. We haven't made it to the stronghold.
  • For the west stronghold area you really need 4 X 4 and while not essential it is a good idea for the east stronghold as well. Gorgeous area with lots of history (and ghosts). Small rigs only is my advice as the roads and many streams you will have to cross can be a challenge. For those with larger rigs I suggest you park them in or around Tombstone and drive your 4 X 4 in for the day.

    :C
  • That's one of our favorite areas but September will probably still be hot. We've hiked Cochise Stronghold trail. :)
  • September should still be pretty hot, I would think.

Neat travel plan, though, to visit the old stage stations. All in Arizona, or have they been in many locations?
