Colonial Williamsburg in June

We're in the planning stages for a week-long trip to Colonial Williamsburg, and will probably be staying at American Heritage cg.

We were thinking about going in the middle of June to beat some of the heat and maybe crowds. Any comments? Any bugs that time of year we should be aware of?
  • We went the second week of September. The weather was great and not a lot of people. The only thing you need to watch for is home school days because they come in groups.
We stayed at American Heritage CG, it was the start of their winter rates, which are a little cheaper. Great place, very clean and trash pickup at your site everyday. It is close to Colonial Williamsburg. From the CG we went down Route 60 to the Colonial Parkway. There are quite a few restaurants and shopping areas along the way.
We did the 7 day ticket, it was nice because we could mix up our visits to all three areas depending on the weather. Buy your tickets online. At Colonial Williamsburg you go to a special desk to get your pass and the line was non-existent. The non ticket holders had lines. Also there is not much if any discount I could find on the 7 day ticket.
  • Then make it early June like JimShoe said. Much later in June and it will be hot & humid. The combo pass for the three attractions is the best deal - did that with our two loooooong time ago.

I'll quick throw this out there - another GREAT time to go is between Christmas & New Years. All kinds of fabulous programs, many of them indoors. That area of VA is tolerable at that time of year and with a little forethought you can camp there in a 3 season rig. Williamsburg at night over the holidays is stunningly beautiful. We've done it twice and will do it again in the future. Enjoy & safe travels, no matter when you decide to go.
  • Thanks for the responses.
We've been to Colonial Williamsburg but it was years ago.
From the feedback it's about what I figured - hit or miss but better than July and August. Since we'll be there a full week we'll get the Williamsburg - Yorktown - Jamestown 7-day pass.
DW was involuntarily retired a few years ago. DD and her husband are educators, and now DW is the babysitter for our 2 grandkids. That makes early June as the first we could go and after Labor Day is out.
  • I've been to Colonial Williamsburg many times. The best times to go are the first two weeks in June or after labor day. In other words, when school is in session. Parents drag their kids there during summer break - often kicking and screaming, until they see it and enjoy it. So, bigger crowds and high humidity. Amazingly, the natives in colonial times didn't have air conditioning, and neither does Colonial Williamsburg. Dress for it.
If you have the time, visit nearby Jamestown and Yorktown. They make up the other two thirds of the "historic triangle". At any of them, you can buy a ticket good for all three.
Colonial Williamsburg covers a large area. But they have free shuttle busses that drive around the historic area, stopping at several places, so you can hop on and off for your entire stay. Still lots of walking, so wear comfortable shoes.
  • The Weather Channel showed the average high/low temperatures for last June 15 to be approx. 80/55 F. Should be perfect.
  • Like many places, June can be hit or miss.

Normally, June in that part of Virginia is pretty decent. However, it's always possible to get the odd hot and humid.

I'd say the earlier in June the better.

July and August are months to stay away from.
  • We went to Colonial Williamsburg in mid June one year and swore we'd never do it again that time of year! The heat and humidity was horrendous. Might have been an off year but it was enough for us. Last time we went was in early October and it was perfect!
