Colorado - We want mountains!!

Hi,

We will be camping just outside Denver (westside) and were trying to find a magical camping spot. Our main features are mountains, everywhere, lake is always pleasent..

That is all.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Google pictures are not bringing anything special.

Thanks in advance.

Estes Park KOA. I haven't stayed in that particular KOA but Estes Park is surrounded by mountains, there are a couple of lakes and the Rock Mountain National Park are near by.

I would avoid that KOA. Right next to a large riding stable. If the wind is right you get stunk out. Not suitable for big rigs. Tight, crowed spaces. Lots of traffic noise.
  • Dillon Reservoir has a number of campgrounds, Heaton Bay is nice. Mountains and water. But yeah as mentioned, it really depends on your other needs/criteria, especially if you need to be close to Denver. That will limit you a lot.
  • You want mountains CO has em. I would forget about KOAs and most state parks. I would head west with a good map and just find a USFS campground when you get to a piece of country you like.

  • Our favorite spot in the mountains while we lived in Colorado was Winding River in Grandby. Close to RMNP and tons of hiking and moose.

Our favorite spot near the foothills was Chatfield State Park about 20 miles south of Denver.

I have been told for that " magical " time in Colorado to shop at those stores with the "green crosses " :B
We like the area around Pagosa Springs, Durango, & Chama NM.

Little more info pls. Need hookups? Time of year? You looking to stay close to Denver or ok an hour outside?

Have you been here before? Pics will never do it justice.

^^^^^ This. Need more information from you to provide informed responses. And a lot depends on what you Google, as to the responses you get.

And you will certainly get responses here to avoid Denver area altogether and go to
    1)Upper Arkansas River area of Salida/Buena Vista/Leadville
2)anywhere in the SW part of the state around Durango/Pagosa Springs/Telluride/Ouray
3)South Fork area of the San Luis Valley including Creede and Lake City area
4)Grand/Summit County area, particularly the west side of RMNP.
