Colorado ~35' TT- Where do you like to boon dock/dry camp?

We're new to the RV scene and going on our 4th trip tomorrow. 3 trips to a state park and once to a private RV park. I'm still getting used to pulling this giant thing and not sure where a good/easy place to start boon docking is (if one exists). We did do one trip in the mountains. The 'Burban pulled great, but still not too excited about the 7% grades :)

It seems like if we were 8-10' shorter and a little lighter I might have an idea of where to go. Hopefully someone with more experience can help out. Thanks!

Sorry...we're in Littleton. Thanks for all the suggestions!

  • Colorado is a big state and you didn't say which part you're looking at, but one of my favorites is the Piedra river between Durango and Pagosa Springs.

There is a National Forest Campground on the west side of the river about a mile north of the highway, but on the east side of the river the road follows the river (though often high above it) for about 15 miles. There are several boondocking locations along the way as well as the end of the road at a bridge across the Piedra.

I would suggest however that you stay in the NFS campground. Access is easier than towing a long trailer on the road on the other side and it does provide a vault toilet as well as potable water (central hand pump).
  • We have been using the Rock creek rd area in the south park ranger district near Jefferson for a few years now. Our trailer is 25 ft but we see much larger. the clearings we use can usually handle 3 or 4 rigs if you wanted so there is lots of room to turn around.
  • There is an easy boondocking are just outside of Grand Lake and Rocky Mtn National Park. Very easy access, and multiple sites that can handle larger rigs, although the first one is the most ideal (great views, and huge area). I stayed in that first space just a few weeks ago: http://www.van-tramp.com/wp/boondocking-near-grand-lake-co/

On the South-East side of the National Park there is the Beaver Reservoir area. Shouldn't be too hard to get yourself in, but turning around a truck with 30+ feet of trailer may be another story: http://www.van-tramp.com/wp/beaver-reservoir/

If you are way down there near Grand Junction, then you can go to Rabbit Valley BLM (Exit #2 of I70, head south). I've only overnighted at the signs, but it does appear to have a good sized dry camping area in there.

I have a few others up in the RMNP area, but I wouldn't recommend a 35' trailer try to get in there.
