x2 on the Mueller SP recommendation. Loved it there.
Personally, unless you have friends/family to visit in the Denver area, or plan a trip to Rocky Mt NP, I'd recommend more time in the Colo Springs area than Denver.
CGs in a couple other places:
for Ft Smith AR, try the KOA in Sallisaw, OK, which is right near the AR border. Nice little place, nothing special but pleasant & shady.
for North Platte NE, the Holiday Trav'l Park is venerable, but has lots of shade (important in midsummer) and a nice little pool the kids might enjoy. Convenient to the interstate and if you're tired of cooking there are a few restaurants nearby. Some of the NE state parks & "waysides" have CGs with electric hookups and of course a different atmosphere than the private, right-by-the-interstate CGs. They do charge an entry fee in addition to camping fees, but if you stay more than 3 nights or so in SPs, it will pay for itself to buy their annual pass. There's a SP near Omaha (haven't ever stayed there) and - though nothing near North Platte - we've stayed at Ft Kearny State Rec Area and liked it.
