Colorado campgrounds

Plan on spending several days in the Glenwood Springs area, Buena Vista area, Ouray area and Durango. Any specific campgrounds that you would highly recommend in these areas? Park reviews are nice; but I really like to hear from folks who have recently camped at any of these campgrounds. Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Near Ouray is a nice KOA in town, but doesn't seem like it. 20 miles North of Town is the Ridgeway State park, VERY nice! Near Durango, on the north side of town Rt.550, is United Campground. All pull thru sites. The famous steam engine train goes thru the middle of the camp twice a day. The train ride is a MUST! City bus stops at the camp and takes you straight to the train station.:B
  • In the Durango area we have stayed in the KOA and Lightner Creek. The KOA is 6 mile east of Durango on highway 160. Nice campground with friendly staff. Has nice playground and swimming pool if you have kids. Lots of trees for shade. Camp store makes pizza that they will deliver to your campsite.

We prefer Lightner Creek campground which is a few miles west of Durango. Didn't stay there last year because there was construction on the road leading to the campground and it would have been difficult getting my fifth wheel through there. They should be done with the construction by now. They have a pool and had a tennis court there the last time we were there. The campground has changed ownership since we were there last so I don't know about the staff now. There are sites with good shade but some have very little shade. It did seem quieter there than the KOA since the KOA is not too far off 160.

There are other campgrounds closer in Durango but we have never stayed at any of them. I think these are bigger campgrounds. One is United Campground that I think the Narrow Guage railroad goes through every day.

In Ouray we have reservations for the KOA for a week this June. I know there are other good campgrounds in Ouray but we stayed in the KOA about 10 or 12 years ago and I remember it being nice and a couple miles north of Ouray.

You can google these campgrounds and get their websites to get more info.
