From an earlier post of Ken's;
Actually, those of us from Colorado recommend that people from out of state don't attempt this road in ANY vehicle. It's narrow and curvey. There are trolls waiting under the bridges who will force you over the cliffs. A rogue avalanche might sweep you away in the summer. There are bandits waiting to hold you up and take your money and children. There's really nothing much to see, and Silverton isn't all that quaint and cute. The massive wildflower displays are vastly overrated. The vivid color combination of green vegetation against the red rocks can be seen at Christmas time in displays all over North America. The mine and ghost town remains are just unpainted, weathered wood -- nothing special. So for your safety, avoid this road in any vehicle at all costs.
This was on a discussion of the road to Silverton a while back - the long and short of the article (Post) is we are just LOVING the Towns and Wilds of Colorado to DEATH!
All of us - residents and Guests! - Issue is the Secret is out, and everyone who can is heading to the Mountains - why ? IMHO because they are just as good as it gets. Great Roads - Great People - Great Wild Places - Great Little/not so little towns. I could go on and on.......
So sure some are fed up with the Dual Season (Used to be just a ski town - but now most are more crowded in the Summer - why? because it is just BEAUTIFUL.
So again IMHO, the issue is we are just Loving the places we Love to death - As Yogi used to say - nobody goes there anymore, it just too crowded.
No real solution - just need to leave fewer footprints.
JMHO,
