Brian, personally I'd prefer Silverton over Ouray as it's more centrally located. The National Forest Sultan/Anvil camping areas, adjacent to one another on either side of a creek, were wonderful when we were there in September:

In my opinion, one day for Mesa Verde should be fine; just be sure to get tickets for one of the tours down into the cliff dwellings. Otherwise you're just looking down upon them from a distance.
