Concord and Lexington, Mass

Saturday we'll be going up to Boston Minuteman Campground and check out Concord and Lexington - Revolutionary War history. Getting to the campground on Saturday, planning on spending Sunday being touristy, then coming home on Monday. May also swing by Waldon Pond to check that out.

Any ideas or specifics about the area?

Thanks!

  • Glad you enjoyed the area! Thanks for the review of the Colonial Inn. We are always looking for new places to try.

Went to the Colonial Inn! We had a "Linner", Lunch/Dinner at around 2:30pm so no problem getting a table. Actually it was a beautiful day, so we got a table out on the porch. Very good food, good service, great atmosphere. I can certainly recommend it. A little expensive, but what I expected for that type of a good restaurant in an area like that. This was on a Sunday, so we found a great place to park - right down the street behind the Colonial Inn is a drug store and bank parking lot. We didn't get to the Concord Museum in time - we heard that it is worth visiting. Next time!

We went to the Minuteman National Park visitor's center and saw the 20 minute presentation - really cool. Done very differently. Looks like you are going to see a stage show with props and all. But they use video, lighting, and LED maps to explain about the very beginning of the Revolutionary War. Very good.

Also went to the North Bridge. Beautiful "visitor's center", which is a gorgeous brick colonial house overlooking the bridge (it is actually the 3rd bridge since the original). Quick 8 minute video talking about the bridge, and that it is the location of "The shot heard 'round the world". The shot heard round the world was actually not the first shot in this battle, but it was where the first shot was fired by militia who received a direct order to fire on the King's troops. Also saw the Minuteman statue - Farmer holding a gun in one hand and a farm plow in the other.

I was a little surprised at how, well, "small" the visitor centers and locations are. Considering that the events that happened were world changing. But as my wife pointed out, it was really a small skirmish - that started the Revolutionary War.

We did not get to Walden Pond.

We had a great weekend, and thanks for the tips and ideas!
  • TVOV, did you pick either restaurant, and if you did, how did you like it?
  • You should probably make a reservation at either. I have never eaten at the Colonial Inn but it's location is perfect-right in downtown Concord. They do have outside seating if it's warm. Ate at Wayside Inn many moons ago and if I remember correctly it was excellent. It's a bit out of the way but in a very picturesque spot with a working gristmill. Check both menus out to make sure they have something for everyone. Offerings can be a bit hoidy-toidy.

Wave as you drive by- I am in site 71 ??

I agree about Walden Pond- a nice place to go for a walk, if you had extra time but for history, head to Concord and Lexington (as a teen, we loved the Concord Bridge for some reason)

if you are looking for a historic place to have a meal, there is the Colonial Inn in Concord, or my favorite, the Wayside Inn in Sudbury.

Thanks! We were wondering about Walden Pond. I just keep seeing signs for it on the highway so thought we'd stop in and at least say we'd been there. I certainly want to see Concord and Lexington, so we'll see how time goes.
  • Visit the Old North Bridge, Lexington Green, Minuteman National Park, wander the downtowns of both (small but quaint), not much for RV parking if at all, and just enjoy. Walden Pond has a $10 fee for non-MA residents but it's a very pretty area. Great place to mellow. If you only have a day I'd concentrate on the history in Concord and Lexington. That by itself is more than a day.
