We take I-65 south to Florida in mid December. We always stay at c.g.'s and have never had a problem getting a site - usually only a couple of other rv's. There are several c.g.s in Kentucky that are open and most in Alabama are available. There is also a park just north of Nashville at Goodlettsville that is open year round and only about 2 miles off the highway. This is the only park that I am aware of that is often full in the spring with Snowbirds going north. Best to make a reservation.
We don't do rest areas so I have no knowledge of their availability.
