Nearby Vedauwoo can be a backup plan should you stay another day or get there a day before your reservation.It's popular and seems to fill up quick FCFS I believe. I did an overnight there on my return trip last summer and it was a pleasant surprise. Rather than leave early the next morning I took the dirt bike out for a spin on area roads. What a beautiful morning it was. I didn't even know about the Ames Monument. Now I do...:)
