We have stayed there several times, but mostly over the Thanksgiving week when visitation is low. I imagine you need to try to get your reservation exactly four months out to have luck, as it is a popular place and you are going at a popular time. Try to start your reservation on a weekday and reserve out from there. I think there are four sites that are first come, first served, but that would be a real gamble and a long drive from town just to find out if there is one.
There are great views from the park and you have quick access to Island in the Sky portion of Canyonlands NP, but it is almost an hour into Moab from the park. Similar times to many other sites such as Arches.
If you get a site bring your own water, as they truck the water in all the way from Moab.
If you like mountain biking, Moab is a great place to go. The trails at Dead Horse Point SP are among the easier and you can ride right from your campsite. PM me if you want more info on biking trails in the area. We typically spend 2-3 weeks a year in the Moab area.
