Depending on how far a walk you're willing to do, Balboa Island is awesome and has a ferry over to the Peninsula for more walking/eating/shopping options.
I haven't stayed there. I used to visit as a kid long before the RV's were the main attraction. It's not far from where I lived until 3 years ago and walking the perimeter of Balboa Island is high on my must-do list anytime I return to the area.
