You'd probably get to the southern Utah parks the second week of October or so. That would be an excellent time to visit them.
It would be safe to take I-80 or I-70 from Detroit then drop down south on I-25 and perhaps take Colorado Hwy 50 across and into Utah.
Not sure I would advise Highway 50 in October - - we come over the second week in Sept a couple of years ago and there was snow on the sides of the roads. Wouldn't want to do that one in October in a rig.
If you have already done the norther route, when not go south out of Detroit, pick up I-40 across to Little Rock and across, maybe a side 2-3 days to Sante Fe, a couple of days in Albuquerque, the divert at Winslow (see if the girl with the flat-bed Ford is around) and head for Mesa, AZ then south to Tucson.

I suggested it because we been along Hwy 50 a few times in October and the weather was gorgeous.
One thing - you can't count on the weather. Yellowstone is bitter cold right now and the area has had snow - in July. :)
