I agree with you that this is a transition stage as we age, but mostly used by the WWII retirees and those that came shortly after them.
Anyone that has ever owned two properties understand the effort (and cost) it takes to maintain two properties. Add in the extra snowbird effort that it takes to shut one place down, pack everything up that one needs for up to 6 months, open up the new place, clean, and then unpack into the new place. It's definitely not for everyone, and definitely not for those use to all inclusive resorts.
I'm thinking that's why you're seeing a surplus of bargain units out there. Supply vs Demand. It's a changing of guard.
