I grew up in south Florida, and swam in the lakes and canals frequently. The lakes around what is now the Hard Rock Cafe and Casino in Hollywood are a few of the places I swam in. Back then it was mostly undeveloped. My friends and I knew there were gators in the lake and that didn't stop us from swimming. But we did have common sense and didn't swim during the alligator mating season, and never after dark, which is when the gators are most active. In most instances the gator is more afraid of you than you are of the gator. Where the parents went wrong was not knowing the nocturnal habits of alligators. The revelation that people were feeding the gators shows that the gators in Seven Seas Lagoon probably lost their fear of man due to such contact. As for Disney "allowing" gators on their property, the gators were there long before Disney and will be there long after the Magic Kingdom turns to dust.
