Sorry you are ignoring one thing, gators get out and walk from one water body to the next. Like this:



I took that shot where I used to work. When they are young they are small and a very young gator would slip right thru chain link. You would have to surround a body of water with fink mesh fence and constantly patrol it to keep them out. Disney visitors probably would not care for the sensation of being in a fenced prison.

Some things you just cannot practically engineer away. And people need to accept that and behave with some caution around wild critters. The only thing that I have seen that Disney did wrong was not putting up warning signs about gators.

Let me point out that the rooms at this resort run between $500 and $1000 a night and people with that much money have a certain mindset which exempts them from follows rules made for the common herd.

I would like to wager that if the water access is cut off, that the number of gators walking thru the grounds of disneyland, et.al. would be minimal, certainly reduced from open water access. and if any gators go thru a chain link fence they can be harvested when they get to a larger size, IIRC Disney has a 4 ft max allowed to stay?

IMO, what happened to this poor little boy was an accident, much like being bitten by a rattlesnake or snatched by a cougar or swarmed by killer bees.
A parent can be RIGHT THERE and it still happens.

As stated in another post, a fence in a culvert will not keep out baby alligators.

Nowadays signs need to be very specific because many seem to have the attitude that "it's not meant for me". We learned this as we volunteer in parks.

I really think signs should be at every water pond in that park with a picture of alligators. Visitors come from places where they don't have these kinds of dangers and they just don't think. It also probably needs to state "no wading or swimming".

Also, why is there a beach there? To most folks a beach goes with water and are used as such. Children are naturally drawn to putzing at the water's edge when there's a beach. That beach should be removed.

It was an unnecessary tragedy.

The news has been full of stories lately where people choose to ignore clearly worded signs and end paying the price. Several incidents in Yellowstone come to mind.

And help me understand why every detail has to be spelled out? No swimming = stay out of the water. Simple. I fail to see why this is so hard to understand.

This is one of the saddest stories I've ever heard, and I can't imagine the grief this family is feeling.

And I can't believe the callous tone of some of the posts in this thread. I hope some of you, who know so much and so easily judge others (be it Disney or the parents), never have such a tragic event occur on your watch.

What hogwash. Yes there will be a gator in any natural body of water in the state. But millions of Floridians and visitors swim without fear in those waters. I personally have been swimming in Florida lakes, rivers and ponds for 50 years and yet to see a gator bother anyone. Indeed it is quite rare to even see a gator during the day. Gator attacks are very rare and you are much more likely to be injured driving to the swimming area than you are to be injured by a gator.

The exceptions, do not go swimming at night and this applies to swimming in saltwater since that is the time when you are more likely to be attacked by sharks. And the second exception, do not swim where gators are being fed by idiots. That reduces their fear of humans.
