I think I understand some of the motivation for setting up camp near another camper. T'was a time when I had never boondocked in the boonies, but I would read of others doing it and I would think how great it would be to do so myself someday. However, the few times when I actually have boondocked with no on else anywhere in sight or hearing, it felt kind of spooky! I'd look over my shoulder a lot, watching for big cats or bears, and I'd feel vulnerable. The feeling isn't as pronounced if I camp in an established CG that happens to be otherwise empty, but it still feels a bit weird. Having at least one other RV within eyeshot is not as unwelcome as I had thought it would be; it's actually rather comforting.
I suspect that the majority of campers prefer being near, if not with, other campers. (Maybe that's part of the reason why it seems like so many city dwellers will escape from the city in their RVs, only to set up camp in some large campground... and thereby help create a new little temporary-city!) :D
Those who truly love being alone out in the boonies are the exceptions. Maybe these hardy folks are more secure or more emotionally self-reliant or whatever it may be. My hat is off to them.
