There are several fine campgrounds in the Durango area; United and Lightner Creek are two of them. Lightner Creek CG has been there for at least 30 years (I first stayed there 30 years ago) so they must be doing something right! It's a very quiet location outside of town but very easy to get into town for access to the sights and to the Silverton & Durango Train.

For water locations, look at locations outside of Durango. There's Vallecito Reservoir that has a couple of very nice campgrounds, as well as the Navajo Lake State Park, which is right on the border with NM. Check RVparkreviews.com for info on both locations; Navajo Lake also comes up as being in NM, but the state park is actually in CO. There's other camping in the area to the south of the SP in NM. Also, if you look a bit further out, in the Bayfield area, there are additional campgrounds that may suit your needs.
  • We have not been there but are planning a trip for next summer. Lightner Creek Campground is where we are planning to stay, seems to get good reviews.
