Durango, Colorado camp spots?

I neglected mention that we have a 35' 5r. I was also hoping for something a bit closer.

Haviland Lake national forest campground is our favorite...just north of Durango.

We really liked Junction Creek, the road up the hill is just a little bit hairy.

United Campground is just off the main road. The Durango Railroad runs through the CG and the CG is on the Animas River. Pretty cool. The far side of the RR is in the trees with nice sized sites. Alas, they are lined up. ;)

We enjoyed United Campground....a trolley stops by the campground which is nice to use to get downtown.

Thanks for the reply 2gypsies! The forest is just our style. Can you tell me where the best sites might be? We are looking at July and only 13,14,16 (elect) are available. Do they allow generators during the day?

Site 16 is parking the RV parallel to the road and the patio area is private. This is probably the best of the three sites.

Site 14 is parking the RV in a backin and the patio area is semi private.

Site 13 is terrible - no privacy and hard to level the RV.

Yes, the non-electric sites allow generators and there are some very nice sites.

Also, have you ever considered Silverton? Lots of nice boondocking up there along with RV parks. The July 4 parade and fireworks are awesome!

Junction Creek is fantastic!! Fill your water tank! The road is washboard but it is really close to town and the trees are thick!

I second the thought of staying in Silverton. Aside from the train and walking Main for an hour or two, Durango was way too busy for my taste. We couldn't even tell we were in the mountains from the parts we were at.

Silverton is "slower" and prettier. Still easy enough to day trip into Durango.
