Here is a wild idea -- how far is it to the north rim of the Grand Canyon? The campground will probably be full, but there is great (and cool!) boondocking out in the Kaibab National Forest.
There's a large fire going on now along the entrance road...not a good recommendation.
http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4845/The Jackson area also has a couple fires - on at Dubois on 26/287 and another at Bondurant on 189/191.
Durango or Montrose don't have fires. Both of these towns will be hot.
I'd suggest going up to Taylor Park north on Gunnison and NE of Almont for some very cool temps. On the way to Taylor Park and quite a few forest service campgrounds along the river. At Taylor Park is a very nice forest service with electric and non-electric sites. There's also a lot of boondocking up there. This isn't too far for a day trip to Crested Butte - a neat community.
Lake City would be another cool suggestion.
