I don't know the age of your kids, but ours two DDs, aged 10 and 7, really enjoyed it when we went to Maine last year. We did Acadia, then Old Orchard Beach and then headed on down to NYC for a few days to take in a couple of shows (I HATE IT!!).
If you haven't done it, DC has so many things to do and see that are FREE! Well, you have already paid for them through your taxes, but they don't cost additional monies.
We enjoyed our time at Assateague with the wild horses and ocean.
We LOVE Point Lookout State Park in Maryland, which has the Potomac River as well as the Chesapeake Bay. Lots of hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, as well as history.
These are just some of our favorite places to visit.
